My PCOS

My PCOS

When I was 16 years old I was diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), this diagnosis came about after my mother read a magazine article in a woman's magazine that was talking about this new disease that gynecologist were missing in teenage girls and woman. After an appointment with my ob/gyn Dr. Gildner I had the diagnosis and birth control pills to regulate my cycle which started when I was the ripe ol' age of 15! The birth control pills helped my cycle but did not help with all the nasty side effects of PCOS of which I had every single one of (except for infertility which come to find out I would have later on when it was time for babies)! Battling PCOS as a teenager was heart wrenching especially since the treatment plans at the time were so vague and nothing helped with the side effects. The dark patches that my mom would tell me to scrub off in the shower because we didn't know any better, being the hairy beast LOL!! All of it stole the "girlyness" out of me, I spent most of my high school career wearing jeans and t-shirts and making fun of myself because that was easier than having people make fun of me! PCOS is hereditary, it is a sad reality that my two girls will more than likely have it, but I will be their advocate, we will get the best treatments and get them on the right track from a young age. Medical Science has made many advancements and it is my hope that we will be able to fix the side effects before they have a chance to manifest into something larger. My mom got my doctors on board from the day she read the article, my sister also has PCOS they  have been my biggest cheerleaders and my support on the days when the I just want to call the doctor for a sex change  a miracle pill to make it all go away!! :) Right now I taking Metformin daily and Provera every other month, I see both a ob/gyn and a reproductive endocrinologist. They run blood work on a 3 month cycle, I have check ups and ultrasounds to view my ovaries which they say aren't working and I have endometerial biopsy's to watch for growth of cancer cells in my uterine lining! Right now all is well and we are thankful!
